Anthropic, an artificial intelligence (AI) safety and research company founded in 2021, has joined The Scott Institute for Energy Innovation at Carnegie Mellon University as its newest Grand Challenge Partner.
The company will provide $1M in funding over three years to support research that leverages AI for electric grid modernization and sustainability, driving energy efficiency and resilience.
“The Scott Institute is tackling some of the most complex challenges at the intersection of AI and energy infrastructure. This partnership represents our shared commitment to ensuring America remains at the forefront of both AI development and energy resilience,” said Sarah Heck, head of policy programs and partnerships at Anthropic.
The Scott Institute is CMU's hub for advancing collaborative research, strategic partnerships, policy outreach, entrepreneurship, and education focused on the future of energy. Its Grand Challenge Partnership Program was established in 2023 to accelerate research on some of the most challenging questions facing the energy transition.
“With the deep expertise of our cross-disciplinary faculty and support from Anthropic as our next Grand Challenge Partner, the Scott Institute is ready to meet the moment and drive solutions for the grid at the nexus of AI and energy,” said Scott Institute Director Costa Samaras.
CMU Energy Week 2025, hosted by The Scott Institute this past March, was centered around AI and energy. This Grand Challenge Partnership with Anthropic will accelerate the groundbreaking research on energy, AI, and sustainability led by The Scott Institute.
